CHARACTERS

Skinwalker

next nature's son

A Skinwalker is a person with the supernatural ability to turn into any animal he or she desires in some Native American Legends. Similar lore can be found in cultures throughout the world and is often referred to as shapeshifting by anthropologists. We all are more and more included and overlaped by digital processes and layered by interferences, that have an influence on our communication and interaction with other people. The images created within the project SKINWALKER show techonological and synthetic aspects of being human or even »posthuman« right now; a term which is used in the concept of transhumanism - the enhancement of the human condition transformed by technological developements.

TAR Can you please introduce yourself and your partners?

DW I have been studying Fine Art in Dresden since 2009, in the specialised master class of Ralf Kerbach; my concentration is in painting and drawing. From my perspective, the increasing digitization and virtualization of our contemporary world, changes the perception of the people. When looking at the shapes and colours and lights of mechanized life forms, in engagement with the nature of a new reality in the consciousness of each individual, the subject occurs more and more in its physicality. Although equally sometimes it seems to be completely absent. The aim in my cosmos is the dismantled dualism between the abstract sphere (of the mind / art) and the world of physicality (human / wilderness). The resulting images are the realities experienced by me, as immediate to the present as possible. Schall und Schnabel are mainly fashion photographers, but with a strong visual language that includes distortions and interferences in their images. After working together once, we realized how interesting it could be to combine our variety of disciplines and concepts.

TAR We see at this point that your art combines painting, performance, videos, photos in the same work. How do you come to this? Can you talk to us about your creative process?

DW Our collaboration started with artist portraits and the idea came to my mind of David Lynch sitting in his painting studio; what would happen if paintings became real?  He is making movies now and we wanted to visualize how a painting transfers into reality in a different way, captured by, and combined with, photography. The unexpected immediacy and atmosphere coming from the dancers at the studio on our first SKINWALKERsessions, inspired us to present this and share it with an audience. It‘s archaic and futuristic at the same time, every painted person, every SINWALKER brought their own strange kind of atmosphere to every photo session. The performance was the highlight of the whole SKINWALKERprojekt. It was a challenge for the painter, the photographers, the dancer and the live DJ, because we had to improvise and react to the very moment. The video just gives a review of what happend on September 2013 in Berlin.

TAR How do you define the Skinwalker project?

DW Skinwalker is an ongoing collaborative project initiated by myself as a painter and the photograpers Pierre Horn & Eileen Huhn after they discovered resemblances in their respective working fields. Dancers and Models were transformed into creatures becoming part of a painting. We all are more and more included and overlaped by digital processes and layered by interferences, which have an influence on our communication and interaction with other people. The images created within the project SKINWALKER show technological and synthetic aspects of being human or even „posthuman“ right now; a term which is used in the concept of transhumanism - the enhancement of the human condition transformed by technological developments.

TAR Would you tell us Something your next project/ exhibition?

DW Now we are working on PD628, the topic is quite similar to SKINWALKER, its about human and transhuman in a futuristic world. This time disappearing in space, nebulas, stars or glossy surfaces. The atmosphere plays with the notion of being human alongside science fiction, and the pictures make an attempt at the confrontation between these two. At the smallest and largest unit of distance.

TAR What do you think of young german art scene?

DW The scene is very varied between romantic realistic painting, like „neue Leipziger Schule“ and on the other side minimal conceptual art. I always liked artists doing stuff which is not usual and moves on the edge of trash, that seems very brave and fresh to me.

TAR Name us  3 interesting artists we may keep our eyes on

DW One who works like this, is Martin Eder, who works with aesthetics from trivial culture, erotic pictures from the internet and portraits of cats, but as a strategy, and thus an exaggeration. And I was fascinated by his different kind of art language: paintings, photos, video, music, performance. He inspired me a lot! Another painter is Daniel Richter working with extreme colours, like neon, very contemporary paintings inspired by graffiti and topics playing with politics and pop culture. And David Schnell, working with colour, perspective and construction pulling the viewer into the picture and creating a new way of constructing nature.

TAR Could you please mention your relationship with music? Is there some musicians/genres you think can be related to your inspirations?

DW The relationship to music is very close; I’m never working without it. It‘s always giving my mind and body a fluent motion, like legal drugs :) Radiohead/ Atoms for peace combining electric sounds with soulful vocals, I always wanted to create paintings like that. And for the performance we always have the german Band „Bohren & The Club of Gore“ in our minds, with their deep, dark and archaic atmosphere.

TAR is the sticky stuff we pave our roads and build our roofs with.

It affords us travel and shelters us from the storm. It is also an anagram of the word art.
